"Perfect Pitch" musical

From: Jack Zimmerman <jmzimmerman@...>Subject: Re: OT: Info on music therapy pleaseKaren,...A few notes on a huge topic...Many of our kids have an innate talent for music. Apparently thereduction in certain cognitive functioning is balanced by anabundance of right brain capability. As we have reported before,Chelsey has perfect pitch, a "natural vibrato" singing voice and anaudiographic memory. This is not rare with ASD kids. Music has beena major stream of healing for Chelsey. I used to work with herdaily, listening to a variety of music, encouraging her to sing andhelping her to make up songs. This activity became a source of greatjoy for us and continues to be a significant part of ourrelationship. When she is with us, she listens to music a lot andhas favorites that she wants at bedtime (right now it's Kitaro). In terms of formal "therapy," there are many systems and programsthast involve music, some of it "filtered" classical music that canhave a strong effect over time on an ASD child's neurology. TheListening Program is perhaps the best known. It incorporates theTomatis approach and others. They have a web site.Another interesting program is "Education Through Music" (ETM) thatis the work of the Richards Institute. They give courses foreducators, parents and therapists who want to deepen their use ofmusic with a wide variety of children. Randal McChesney is the keyperson for ETM and can be reached at 805 905-7363.There is also an organization called "Imagine" in Boulder Coloradothat works with speccial needs children with music. I haven'tcontacted them yet, but you can reach Jennifer at Imagine at 303 818-1098. There are others around the country and, of course, manyindividual musical therapists, some of whom focus on ASD children. It is a huge field. On December 7th, Teresa posted a reference to music and autism thatyou might find interesting...We can talk further off-line if you would like...Jackadoptinggrace <adoptinggrace@...> wrote:Hi.. someone asked me today about music therapy for our kids. Wehave never done this and I have no clue about it. If anyone candirect me to info on this, I'd appreciate it so much and I'll passit along.Blessings,Karen in AL
